Is that really your artist statement?

I am always amused by artist statements that say absolutely nothing and manage to be pretentious at the same time.  It is good to know there are others who share my thoughts on this subject:  How the Art World's Lingo of Exclusivity Took Root, Branched Out, A...

That article references this one, which is also quite entertaining International Art English

So now I will write my own.  "I am an artist.  I move paint around on canvas, using colors, shapes, and lines that please me.  There is no purpose, no hidden meaning, no secret message in my art, there are just colors, shapes, and lines that please me."

I have never heard of an artist statement before but I am definiely no fan of any form of elitism that makes others feel like they don't belong, which is a pretty basic human need. Maslow may not have had it ALL figured out but he nailed the fact that folks need to belong.

I was thinking that it would be fun to right an artist's statement using Art Bollocks, but then put a translation underneath.

So true Mary, so true! I paint, so I am an artist.

(HAHAHAHAHAHAHA) Here's an announcement I will save for some future exhibition:

Work of Meta-Art in the Age of Symbiotic Reproduction

The matrix creates, the chaos profligates. In the synoptic reality, art objects are calculations of the iterations of the matrix -- a matrix that uses the chaos as a parallax to deconstruct ideas, patterns, and emotions. With the rationalization of the electronic environment, the matrix is approaching a point where it will be free from the chaos to realize immersions into the machinations of the delphic reality. Work of Meta-Art in the Age of Symbiotic Reproduction contains 10 minimal java engines (also refered to as "memes") that enable the user to make absurd audio/visual compositions.

measuring chains, constructing realities
putting into place forms
a matrix of illusion and disillusion
a strange attracting force
so that a seduced reality will be able to spontaneously feed on it

Mary Barfield's work investigates the nuances of modulations through the use of jumpcut motion and close-ups which emphasize the Symbiotic nature of digital media. Barfield explores abstract and tarred scenery as motifs to describe the idea of hyper-real reality. Using illuminated loops, vectors, and allegorical images as patterns, Barfield creates meditative environments which suggest the expansion of culture...

I've found I stare at an artist statement far longer than the work itself since most A.S. are cryptically worded to sound important and much more than "I like to paint, and I paint what interests me"

I guess that is why whenever I coach younger artists on statements about themselves and art, my first sentence starts with 'Don't fill this page full of bullshit.'

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
