Now a land owner.

About four months ago the wife and myself closed on a house (our first to be specific) and completely lucked out in having a garage that is detached (and 2 car sized) ... previous owner used it as his workshop ... so with the bountiful storage and large open space ... I now have a real studio space.

Now to get it organized ... with renovations almost done on the house ... I guess I have my next job ready for me.

Is that really your artist statement?

I am always amused by artist statements that say absolutely nothing and manage to be pretentious at the same time.  It is good to know there are others who share my thoughts on this subject:  How the Art World's Lingo of Exclusivity Took Root, Branched Out, And Then Rotted From Within

That article references this one, which is also quite entertaining…

Autism

It's simple. It should all be simple. It may not be as simple as that. It shouldn't be as simple as that. It should be complicated. It has to be complicated. So that you'll feast on simpleness when you finally find it. And when you do find it, keep it. Keep it simple.…

05ue98hr2bmf9 Grayson Perry

Recently a short series of programmes on working class, middle class and upper class taste  made by artist Grayson Perry was aired on Channel 4 here in the UK. Here is the first video in the series, now available on Youtube:

It was a fab series, really well-presented, thoughtful and engaging and Grayson Perry has had a lot of good reviews (and apparently also has a contract with Channel 4 to make more programmes YAY!)

The tapestries he made as an…

International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, June 2012

Back from the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, Mass.  I acted as coach/personal manager for the one and only Mo Godbeer, who was invited to give a talk on the encaustic scene in Australia.  Mo traveled all the way from Sydney first to DC, where she and Mary Helena (who traveled from London) visited for a week and a half (they hit as many art museums as they could).  They then went to NYC for a few days before traveling to Provincetown for the encaustic conference.  Mary…

LMM Should Take Over Art & Soul - Repost from LMM A&S Group

As you all know, I love Art & Soul.  However, in the past few years it has become scrafter haven.  While there are some really great instructors/classes, they appear to be endangered. Sooooo, I think LMM should take over Art & Soul.  Not really, but I think we have such a rich source of potential instructors that you should all submit applications to teach in April.  Of course, you would have to move fast since Glenny is probably already in the process of lining up her workshops. …

Busy...Busy...Zombies

It's been a busy few weeks. I've been in a few art shows the past month that went really, really well and now I have to work on more pieces for shows in July. No rest for the wicked :)

My grandmother just had brain surgery but everything went extremely well and she's back home now. My duty over the next week is to stay with her while my parents are at work. It gave me a good excuse to take off of work and I should be able to get some painting in while spending time with her. We've had…

05ue98hr2bmf9 Visit to Dublin

I recently visited Dublin for a few days. For a long time I had wanted to see the studio of Francis Bacon, which was donated to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin by Bacon's heir John Edwards.

I spent a few hours on two separate days in the Hugh Lane, soaking up the atmosphere of the studio - an amazing installation in what they call a "micro-gallery" at the back of the building. Not only is the entire room rebuilt there and most of the contents still in it as they were found, but also…

How Art Works

It may have taken me years to figure this part out, but art is very much rooted to the advantaged qualities of the artist (whether that be painting, singing, drawing, dancing, sculpting, photographing, etc). So.....what the heck does that mean? Well, put it this way - if you're a veteran, handicapped, mentally ill, autistic, or possess any traits that make you stand out from the crowd, then consider embracing these traits in your artwork. This may sound strange and might even be offensive to…

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIc02QBihJQ&feature=share&list=UUM6N5AOYoyg6eAkbcDWpNFg

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
