How did you hear about Loving Mixed Media?
I happened upon Gary's youtube videos. I wanted to join this group because I love mixed media and love combining the un-expected.

Not quite mixed media....yet

I have jumped into the world of metal clay...and I love it.

My introduction to the art of metal clay

Once I am sure my pieces are properly fired and I have a better handle on the clay, I plan to combine polymer clay and metal clay together in jewelry pieces. They make stunning works of art.…

MIA....and I may be for a little while longer

The summer and fall have been filled with family illnesses, deaths and a host of other tragedies that have put a damper on my creative spirit. I'd recently come out of the funk I was in and made the decision to rededicate a portion of each day to some creative endeavor.

However on last Friday, I think the last straw broke. I was robbed a gunpoint at 1pm on a bright sunny day and I cannot tell you the terror I felt at that moment and still feel every moment of the day and night. I… Continue

WIP...my 1st non-abstact (sorta kinda) encaustic piece

Posted on July 29, 2009 at 4:00am 7 Comments

I've been wanting to do an actual picture with encaustics and not an abstract piece. I've been working on painted series of ladies featuring afros (I'll post them later). I was inspired to give it a try in beeswax.

OMG....I never thought it would be that hard! Bless those that have mastered it.

Anyway, I am loving the way she is turning out. A little cartoonish, but hey this really is not easy.

She is done on a wood panel with canvas gesso'ed on. I started with… Continue

Implosion progress....still a WIP...I think

Several weeks ago, I started a texture painting with spackle and eggshell. I kinda liked the dark moody funky feel, so I was hesitant to add color.

But, I decided to add some color. At first it was way too bright. But I toned it down with some antiquing gel. Not sure I'm done with it yet. Needs something else.

BTW....did you know kids look at you strangely when you're harvesting… Continue

Please leave me be to create in my own way

Warning....rant to follow.

I just want to be left in peace to create as I want to. I want to market my art as I want to. I really don't need all the side chair art critics, wanna be career managers, and just all out useless busy bodies.

If you think I'm wasting my talent, so be it, but it's my talent to waste. I don't want to participate in every craft, art, community, church, school function, monthly flea market you hear about. I pick and choose when and where I want to… Continue

Just a little welcome to all our new members of Encaustic art group and a re-hello to old members.
How are you all going with your encaustic journey.Let em know what is going on with your work. I am happy to answer any questions on waxing or to debate anything with you.
If you have found any encaustic artists that you would like to share with us all that would also be fab.
I am really keen to see members work and really get this group going a bit more. Tell me what you want to see in here. Or any new ideas that would be good for our group, which is now topping 127 members.

I viewed your shallac burning on youtube a while back and I liked the results so I finally got to try it last weekend. I'm working it into my current piece and loving it. Thanks so much for sharing the technique.

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
