I haven't been on much lately because I'm busting my ass to get a sculpture done. I am working on a project that was just accepted to Scrapel Hill III Exhibition in Chapel Hill, NC.  Basically, a…Continue

Thinking Inside the Box

"Ahhhh, now I get it. The piece has to already be rusty! Thanks soooo much for sharing the method with us Rob. I just love how this piece came out. Really Fantastic! Can't wait to try it!"

"Hey Wendy! Before we get to the water... One important point is that a week may not be the right amount of time. In some cases, one hour has been enough (if the pieces are small, rusty, and the humidity is right.) Some cases, I have let it sit for…"

"Just one more question Rob. How do you apply the water. Do you wet the individual pieces before you lay them down or do you continually spray the canvas over the duration of the week. This is such an awesome technique!!!"

Another challenge

Posted on February 2, 2011 at 6:06am 5 Comments

Under the "when it rains it pours" category, another corporate center has asked me to do a large scale piece.  They have a 27 x 10 foot map of North Carolina made out of plywood.  They'd like me to turn it into an artwork.  They like the image that Gary has so gracefully featured here lately, "Prime Meridian", so I'm thinking of a large scale image along those lines.  But if anyone has ideas for a 30 foot x 10 foot work in the shape of North Carolina I am all ears.

The Gauntlet has been thrown down

If you put your name out there as an artist, sometimes it leads to results. This is one such time. I have been asked to decorate the Castalia building in Chapel Hill:

72,000 square feet.

To say I'm pooping rectangular masonry would be an understatement.

I have already begun preparing a 20 foot canvas to fill one of the thirty foot bays in the foyer.… Continue

My DIY Booth setup

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 4:28pm 4 Comments

My goal was to make a booth setup that has the following characteristics:

  • As inexpensive as possible
  • Easy to store and move
  • Reasonably rugged
  • Very configurable
  • Lightweight
  • Individual
  • Stable

The design I came up with is basically upholstered foam within 2 x 4 foot pine frames. They are joined along each long edge by 4 set screws which press against 2 inch metal dowels. I now have a highly configurable booth…

My first art fair

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 3:21pm 10 Comments

I had the first day of my first art fair today. Attendance was extremely low. I'm talking four hours of standing without a single customer in the entire place. Several of the exhibitors pulled out of the show. On the upside, of the 10 or so customers I was able to entertain throughout the day, I sold 3 pieces and got a very strong nibble which I think is going to result in a commission. Then I came home to find two friends had seen my facebook update of the show so they are remotely buying… Continue

Yeah January is about right LOL. Luckily, I had extraheavy gel, so it may cure faster than my usual soft gloss gel. (fingers crossed...for a long time?)

Cheers!

Hey Rob,
Thanks for the shout back. Yeah I sort of messed up my poured piece with the hardware, but I think it is correctable as the messy bit is quite transparent. Still waiting for the gel to cure though - it's about 3/16" thick under some of those circuit boards.

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
