Miami Art Basel

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 3:01pm 7 Comments

I just returned from a trip to warm and sunny Miami Beach, attending the greatest art event of my life...Miami Art Basel...and I'm wondering if there were any others here at LMM who may have attended last week? It's an international art show which attracts artists, collectors and patrons from around the world for four glorious days of viewing (and buying) thousands of pieces of amazing art! I didn't buy anything, just did the "looking." The big event takes place at the Miami Beach Convention…

Amazing Assemblage and Collage Artist

Posted on April 26, 2010 at 2:27am 9 Comments

Every once in awhile I check out this website of one of my favorite mixed media artists...a lady who lives in New Zealand, who creates amazing assemblages...she is a specialist in stunning incongruity! Have a look in each of her assemblage "rooms," but also check out her collage work. She also has a photo of her workspace/studio...very messy, but she says that is the way she works best...me too !! I have to be surrounded with all my stuff in order play appropriately with my collection of… Continue

Hey there! Many thanks for adding me as a friend. You're one of the reasons I got into this collage&assemblage thing so it trully is an honour being here!

Greg, have a look at my latest assemblage Frank. N. Stein, I value your comments. I have been collecting a few bits and pieces each week then coming up with an idea using those bits. A couple of weekends ago I manage to get some cigar boxes so they could be my next assemblages.

Thanks for your comments Greg, I haven't had time to look for any new boxes yet, may be next weekend, but I am starting to formulate some Ideas for another assemblage.

thanks for your comments Greg, I couldn't have made it without  the inspiration from your work. I am working on some of my normal stuff at the moment until I can find another box and frame to see it I can produce a better assembalage this time.

Greg,

I have down loaded my first assemblage on to my home page, I haven't got the lighting right yet but it gives the general idea.

This work is inspired by the works on your site, thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for the information Greg, I have a set up with a tripod where the centre can be reversed so that I can also photograph the art when it is placed on the ground. I have also used the trick with the card and the camera lens, although I wasn’t using a black card, I must get some.

I had to use this set up to photograph some of the plexiglass art that I have been producing.

I understand what you are saying about the lamps, I think I have some that may do the job. I will play around on the weekend and see if I can come up with something that works. I hope that my first Assemblage is good enough to show on the site, I will let you know when I have up loaded it.

Thanks again and I am sure I will have more question in future but won’t make a nuisance of myself.

Mike.

Greg,
I am a new to the site and have just started producing assemblages inspired by some of your work, however I now need to take some photographs of the work. It has taken me a while to come up with a good set up for taking photos of my art work but how do you stop reflections in the glass when you have a frame and glass in front of the assemblage.
I could take a photo without the glass but I have items stuck on the glass that are part of the complete concept.
Your feed back would be appreciated.
You produce some great work, I didn’t realise how complicated it was till I tried it myself.
Thanks, Mike.

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
