- I have always had an interest in art and creativity. With an initial emphasis on acrylic painting I have watched other artists or attended workshops and tried out ideas or techniques, always feeling my way and looking for inspiration.
Within the Cooktown School of Art Society I've found that members have freely offered constructive critiques and advice on painting techniques. I have learnt a lot by watching other artists.
I'm interested in mediums such as graphite, pastel, oil and mixed media. Inspiration for my work stems from people, community and nature. My styles vary from traditional representational to impasto abstract or contemporary. I haven't yet settled to one medium or artistic style.
Computers are also an interest. I use a digital camera to capture images that I can use to create digital photographic ‘art’. This has led to a variety of experimentations with style, colour and format.
With each artwork or photograph I aim to create something unique whether in a traditional or a more expressive style. As long as I challenge myself and provide interest for the viewer I will continue to enjoy creating visual art.

"Red Pepper Art" formerly called the "Not over the Hill Art Group" consists of a group of Cooktown artists that has just relocated to the new Cooktown District Community Centre building. Recently started life drawing classes which has given me a renewed enthusiasm for art. We meet in the gallery every Monday and have a model who is very good at the poses and keeping still. We have nine participants and are really enjoying the chance to use a live model. It is so different drawing from life and the nude is so much more fun than still life objects!

My Creativity Needs Inspiration! 'Lovin' Mixed Media' - So Refreshing!

I am so lucky to live on a rainforest block with the sounds of nature surrounding my 'art space' but these last few months I haven't been feeling very creative or inspired. I am hoping this is due to the need for a break. I am going on a respite holiday to Brisbane for 27 days in October - as carer for mum who had a stroke 11 years ago I don't get away very often so am looking forward to the change of scene. When I return refreshed I'm hoping for an explosion of creativity!

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.
And this is the completed screen ready for printing. I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).
