The recipe is not for making bitumen. The bitumen is actually an ingredient. Take a look at http://lovingmixedmedia.com/forum/topics/bitumen-1 and it tells you where you can find it online. I don't use the liquid asphalt/crack sealer that they have at Lowes and Home Depot as it works differently. The product that is most like what Gary uses, and that is available in the US is Noxudol 1600, and the information on it can be found at the link above.

Irezumi, holy MAN, what a pain the whole bitumen thing has been! It's not something that Americans seem to be aware of. I reaserched the forum here and some of Gary's videos to finally come up with a recipe to make it. I use a combination of mineral spirits and liquid asphalt/crack sealer. I mix the 2 and just paint it on. I try to do this outside....or I recommend a ventilated space. It's not fumey, but the idea of mixing this gunk and breathing it in freaks me a little! Hope this helps!
I just remembered....wahile back someone on this forum had created a very good bitumen and was selling it. Gary tested it and I believe he liked it. I would ask him about it.

Where were you able to score bitumen? I have been to several art stores and they all look at me like I am asking them to cure cancer.

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.
And this is the completed screen ready for printing. I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).
