A lot of you have expressed an interest in Black & White digital Photography so November is the First of a series of Black & White challenges over the next 12mths. The Photobabble section for November will have a very quick look at learning how to see in Black & White. What to look for when trying to train your brain to filter out colour. Black & White is a huge area of learning and extremely satisfying - for me more so than colour. It can be so emotive.
Loch Muick Scotland - Nicole Umina
The challenge for this month is to look around you and try to learn your contrasts in Tone - Texture - Composition etc. It can be anything or any subject you like, people, landscapes or even every day items become striking if done well and a great place to start, but It's important to try to begin Visualising in Black & White, you will find it's a very different thing to Visualising in Colour - Colour Photography leads itself to realisim. Black & White by its very nature already breaks that rule so you are given much more scope to break rules and really push your contrasts. The biggest difference between colour and Black & White Photography is EXPRESSION. So play - take as many shots as you like - show us your best and show us your worst - look at what makes it work and what doesn't. In future challenges we will refine down the challenges to more specifics but for now - go play and get a feel for a new genre and find out what you really enjoy photographing.
I'm a big one for people's blogs and there are a wealth of great photography blogs out there where people express and share their experiments, experience and knowledge. One I particularly like is Cole Thompson Black & White Photography Blog if your interested in reading other peoples experiences it's a nice place to start.
Photobabble Post

It's a brief introduction and like i said before we will go into more depth in specifics later on in some challenges so don't feel to overwhelmed.

Permalink Reply by Nicole Umina on November 5, 2011 at 10:28pm Can I just remind everyone that Photos are to be taken the Month of the challenge from the 1st, that way the shots are specific to the challenge. I do realise that I haven't put all the information up on Photobabble yet so it's hard to be specific to the challenge but something will defiantly be up by late tomorrow - but there is a different in physically taking a photo with your mind concentrating on a specific like Tone Composition Texture etc and just adding a photo you have previously taken - any photo you would like to share that has been taken at any other time can be shared in the Share your Photography with us Discussion. It's an important rule to us all as this is a learning and progressive group, so you will probably hear us harp on about it till everyone is sure of the guideline.
And Please take notice of the size of your files and upload only files 120kb or smaller. It's a site rule not just a photography rule - some poor lil computers get very tired trying to struggle with the larger files.
Cheers - Nicole :o)
Permalink Reply by Nicole Umina on November 5, 2011 at 11:39pm No sorry it wont be changed. It totally defies the point of the challenge if it's not taken for a specific challenge - while that was okay for the old photography challenge it doesn't suit or fit with why we made this group to start with. It's a learning group and people learn by doing specific tasks for specific challenges. while 30 is current as time goes - it doesn't have anything to do with the challenge specifications. we may as well just say post whatever you took over the last two months regardless. To learn about something and do something you have to know what the task is then go out and do it - not do it in hindsight. it's not a matter of being current, it's a matter of physically going out and taking something prompted by the challenge. So sorry that's a big No.I cannot stress enough to everyone that this rule will Not change.
But again feel free to show any photos you have taken recently outside the months challenges in the Share your Photography with us - that's what it's there for. In fact feel free to share images you have taken previously that fit the challenge In the Share your Photography Discussion, as there is no reason why you should be denied the pleasure of sharing. We in no way what to exclude the sharing of images. But Challenge rules stand for Challenges. We are trying to offer alternatives for peoples sharing of images outside of challenges so please feel free to make use of them - it's a great way to share images.
Permalink Reply by Danielle Evans on November 6, 2011 at 1:43am Well said Nic.
I'd like to think of the challenges as an opportunity for discovery and learning. We go out and do the homework and post it here when it's finished.
The Share Your Photography discussion is like our own little gallery of lovely photos.

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.
And this is the completed screen ready for printing. I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
