Traci Bautista
by Palma Rea
Today, I saw Traci Bautista work and fell in love with the colours and movement that she creates using her Graffiti style layers. So, I went for the Graffiti Bouquet workshop.
What a disappointment! This contains 4 videos to watch online, only one of which I thought actually had good content and not very good sound quality.
You get to download 4 PDFS which contain a list of materials, suggested sites and reading, and just basically a written list of what she used, telling you to make marks here and there etc!! It's also difficult to read the little that is written because it's on a very colourful background. There are no step by step photos, either.
I would recommend this if it were a FREE class!
Suzi Blu
by Palma Rea
About 2 years ago I took a Suzi Blu class. I like her energy and her style plus she lets you keep her videos and I was a beginner at the time.
by sunny
My first online art course was Suzi Blu's first "Petite Dolls" class, which was $55. We were to learn how to draw the "petite doll", how to add mixed media elements/embellishments and how to go over the painting with beeswax. The course was a combination of videos with supporting PDF documents. (I'd have to review my materials to say how many of each.)
My second was Suzi Blu's "Be Divine" goddess workshop which as also $55. We were to complete several art pieces meant to "empower" us as women, do journal assignments and learn about different goddesses. This class was also a combination of PDF documents and videos and again, I'd have to review my course materials to say how many of each.
My third was Suzi Blu's "Rodeo Girl" workshop, which was $15. This was a series of videos and I believe two Pdfs meant to show us how to create a specific painting and learn what Suzi called a "muddy, shabby effect". We again learned how to draw and shade the "petite doll", but this time with pencil crayons as opposed to paint, which was the shading method used in the first Petite Dolls class.

by Deb Godley
I did an online Art Journaling course with Viv over 5 weeks in November last year. Viv’s videos were comprehensive and detailed. They were entertaining also, which inspired me more, (great music etc).
There were instructions to print out, and a list of materials required was emailed out on confirmation of your place.
I found this helpful because I had everything I needed in advance...no rushing out after the lesson to get what you needed so you could do your class.
I felt it was value for money -- I only wish that I could have kept a copy of the videos to watch again and again.....
but other than that, Viv was always there if you needed a chat and she always had scheduled chats, where we could make sure we were all online at the same time to have group discussions about our work.
There was a real sense of community there too...lovely site.
Sadly, I think Viv takes her site down after each class.

Michael deMeng
Michael deMeng travels around the country (and Mexico) teaching workshops, and he is offering his first online (but not live) class starting January 1, 2011. Register here: http://michaeldemeng.blogspot.com/2010/11/registration-open-for-online-art.html
by d
I thought that those of us taking deMeng's online course about Color Washes could talk about it here. Let's not give out any of Michael's sercrets, though, because I'm sure he'd love to have more students pay for his course (which isn't a lot of money, btw, and i feel as if I've gotten a lot of value already - not even a week into it).
This is a work-at-your-own-pace course -- There is a yahoo group for students, and, on Sundays Michael plans to post new videos which answer questions posed during the week. He does answer questions DURING the week as well.
He has a password-only blog on which he has posted 13 videos and 19 PDFs. The videos show his techniques and each PDF deals with a different color.
SO. I've watched 8 of the videos so far and, while I haven't tried the washes yet (because of time -- NO time until Saturday), they look REALLY cool and I can't wait to start experimenting.
Michael is very comfortable with the camera, and he's doing a great job of explaining how he mixes his colors and does his washes.
Added: I just finished watching all the videos and am starting to look at the PDFs. Michael is very forthcoming with his techniques, adding a video the other day on what brushes he uses, and showing the viewer how he mixes colors on and off the palette. His posted his first Q&A video yesterday -- answering students' questions about how he mixes colors, whether one needs to use his heat technique on metals, etc. Good answers, good bonus videos. Now I'm going to try some of the washes myself.
Jane DesRosier (gritty jane)

It appears that Gritty Jane has only one tutorial available for $20 – Top Ten Ways of Creating a Textured Surface. 43-minute video for $20. http://www.grittyjane.com/blog/?cat=106 However, I can’t for the life of me find the tutorial or how to buy it or any more information than the tease.
Course: Cloth and Clay doll class ($40 -- may not be available – invitation to this ning group is by invitation only)
http://clothclaydolls.ning.com/
by Palma Rea 2011
I am currently taking a class with Gritty Jane, Portraits and Paper.
I highly recommend this class for beginners to intermediates. She carefully in her videos how to draw faces, see values ,drawing exercise and how to paint portraits. She will carefully go through the process step by step.
You can download her videos and keep them, too! This is great value for money. She has a Flickr group to post work and open discussions.
by Kerin
I did both her techniques class (don't remember what it was called any more) and the Cloth and Clay dolls. I think Jane is so creative and fun and just loved both her classes. I definitely felt I got what I paid for and didn't really need to ask questions myself. But I did see her answering other student's questions quickly and completely.
I was sad to see her take down the other ning site with all the wonderful techniques. I watched those many times when I was on my exercise bike. Definitely made my mornings very inspiring!
by Beverly
I did the Cloth and Clay doll class. I was part of the second group. I thought it was worth the money for me and I got all that I expected from the course. The techniques were explained really well with lots and lots of videos explaining all of the steps, and were easy to follow. When I did the class it was available on a separate blog and when the class ended I no longer had access to the videos, as they weren't downloadable. However shortly after that, Jane set up the Cloth and Clay Doll Ning group and all people who were part of her previous two workshops were invited to join the group, where the videos are available. Jane also sets challenges within the group and constantly tries to stretch those within the group. As regards feedback from the tutor, that was constant, and any issues that people were having she made quick videos to explain problems or explain in further detail. I felt that Jane was really on the ball with this workshop, offering helpful, relevant and timely responses. She even helped those who were having trouble getting hold of the Creative Clay she uses. It was a class I was really happy to have taken and would fully recommend. The class I believe is now available on an ongoing basis where you can sign up at anytime and have access to the class and the videos.
By Lu
Which course/s did you take?
Cloth and Clay Dolls, though at the time I was too busy to actually do the class and instead watched the videos. Still yet to find time to actually do the class.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Yes very clear. Jane is a great teacher.
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
I didn't have any but saw Jane was very helpful to others.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, Pdfs or other) and was the presentation clear?
Lots and lots of videos and also useful templates. All very clear and easy to learn from.
Did you find the techniques easy?
I haven't actually made the item as yet but already know ahead that I struggle with working with clay. Jane’s instructions look easy.
Is this instructor teaching something new? This type of item was new to me.
Do you think that this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Yes it was absolutely value for money. The only thing I didn't like was that you can't download videos. Especially as I didn't have time to do the class at that time. I know that you can still access the videos -- which is good, but I am a member of far too many ning sites and websites to remember what is where and what I am yet to view. I would rather have everything saved on my computer, and know where it all is when I'm ready to view a class.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
Class size was fine.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Yes but just know that you can't download videos which I know is important to some people.
Tim Gagnon
http://www.timgagnon.com/lessons.html
Tim offers landscapes lessons on DVD: Landscape Basics, a 12-week lesson set; Misty Forest Landscapes, a four-week lesson plan; and he also offers individual lessons.
by Darla Peterson June 2009
Well, I cancelled out of this class after 8 weeks of payments. Tim is busy, granted, but he shouldn't have started a class in my opinion when he had a summer of travels and art shows perhaps?
We were supposed to get a dvd and pdf file weekly. The DVDs have no labels on them, just sharpie marker scribbled on them that say 'week1' etc. They arrived in a white paper envelope......no protection at all and I'm shocked the ones I received were actually in one piece when I got them.
Shortly afterward, he started skipping mailings and mailing two DVDs at a time. He has an online forum where we can post pictures and discuss but it appears to me that it's all the students that are keeping it going and not a lot of input, critique or advice from the teacher himself. There's several people airing their disappointment at this time.
As of today, it's been almost a month since I paid for week 8 and have still not received it. I have not received week 7 pdf either. It's clearly stated that a person can cancel at any time so I'm not sure why I'm not getting the final dvd. I emailed him on August 6 and have also recently filed a paypal dispute and still no response.
The DVDs are good.......but long and almost put me to sleep. He's a talented artist, no doubt.....but in my honest opinion should not be calling this an 'online class' when in fact he's mailing out DVDs when he has time and you're on your own to figure it all out.
Sorry if this is harsh......but it was an expensive little venture for me.

Marie is an awesome teacher! Her vids are clear and pdfs are wonderful. She is quick to get back to you on any questions and I feel the classes are well worth the small amount of money she charges....I will continue to take classes with her for a very long time!
by Ingrid June 2009
Which course/s did you take? Jewelry and painting on air dry clay
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Jewelry: yes and no. It was completely new to me, and because of the detail of the work I sometimes had trouble seeing it properly on the video. On the other hand, the pdf was very clear and Marie was very helpful.
Painting: Yes, easy to follow.
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions? Yes, very dependable.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc.) and was the instructor clear?
Yes, apart from the viewability of the small parts in the jewelry video, the presentation was great, and Marie is a great teacher.
Did you find the techniques easy? Yes.
Is this instructor teaching something new?
For me it was completely new, and the greatest thing is not even Marie's ability to teach the techniques but to bring across her love and genuine enthusiasm for her medium of choice. In my case it's been very catchy.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Most certainly.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Definitely. By all means, yes. They are wonderful workshops to take both for people that are new to clay, and I think also for people with some experience, because you Marie's style of working with clay is probably inspiring anyway. it's wonderful to learn from a great artist like her.
by Debs
Courses: Hand Building, What a Relief, May Birds
I loved these little courses; they weren't too expensive and Marie's pdfs were great. I would recommend one of her classes definitely.
by Crissi
Which course/s did you do?
I have done the Birds, Bulbs, April Fools, and jewelry making courses.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand? Most definitely
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions? Yes and so very helpful
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc.) and was the instructor clear? Yes
Did you find the techniques easy? Yes. I was surprised, as I have never worked with clay before.
Is this instructor teaching something new? Yes every time. I can’t wait for July’s workshop.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Sure is value for money and worth every penny.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
Right amount of people -- I don’t think with these classes numbers matter if there was 2 or 50 it would be the same.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Yes - I would recommend doing the courses. They are easy to follow and great value for the money. Also great for the beginner or experienced clay artist.
Paulette Insall
http://www.pauletteinsall.com/E-classes.html
http://pauletteinsall.typepad.com/
Paulette now only offers downloadable courses/workshops – Color Me Beautiful, All About Faces, Organic Dimension and Enjoying the Journal.
by tlccreates June 2009
I took two classes from Paulette Insall, the portraits class and the backgrounds class. The instruction was very clear videos where she demonstrated techniques, showed supplies used, and offered alternative ideas. Each course was based on the start to finish steps in one of her paintings. Each week she posted a new video, listed the supplies used and those needed for the next week's lesson, and a pdf list of the steps covered in that week's video lesson. Her instructions were very clear and she even offered downloadable sketches for students to use if they were not confident with their own drawings yet wanted to continue on with the lessons.
The lesson materials were posted in a ning type site, as I recall, with students to use a class flickr site for posting photos of their progress with the lessons. The flickr site was also used for discussions, and postings of inspirational threads.
Personally I was a bit disappointed in the class because I was really looking forward to the discussions and feedback as being important parts of the learning process. I have been in classes where I learned more from those discussions and feedback than from the actual lessons. I didn't feel that the discussion area at flickr was conducive to developing good back and forth communication. I much prefer an email group like yahoo groups or a site that is really set up for discussion forums. I also felt that the feedback from the teacher and fellow classmates, concerning the photos shared showing our progress, was more "atta-boy" than critiques or suggestions. Life happens and in this case the teacher had to make a trip for family matters during our class time. She tried her best to check in and had pre-arranged for the lessons to be posted on time but her absence was felt. I took a class a few years ago in which the instructor had a medical issue and missed a few weeks but since the discussion board was already in full active mode her absence was not as obvious. We had such a good community of students all experimenting and sharing their results, with that class, that we continued without the instructor. In fact our board was is full gear a couple weeks after the course ended when the site closed the board in preparation of the next series of classes. So we took our discussions to a public thread for a bit as we finished up our discussion for another week or so. True, it was the willingness of the students that really added to that class and you can't count on that for each class, nor can you blame the teacher for having lurker-type students. But a teacher that is active in the discussions and using constructive criticism along with suggestions for improvement or experimentation will definitely encourage the students to do the same.
I am glad that I took the classes because it got me to do the projects and some things that I have never done before. I don't feel that I learned a lot of new techniques but that is because I have been around a while and have learned from many different places in many different media. But it seemed like the other students were enjoying learning new things. Paulette is very good with her folk art type paintings and teaches those techniques very clearly. She is sweet and I am sure would love to have the discussion groups develop into more than they were. Perhaps her next class will.

Course: Prompt a Day ($25 per month)
by Miki Willa
This is my third month with Kelly's A Prompt a Day course. I really enjoy it. I have recommended it to others who have also enjoyed it. Kelly gives great instructions and is always there to answer questions. Her feedback on my work is prompt and very encouraging. I do believe it is really worth the money I pay. I am amazed that Kelly does find the time to do her own creative work, teach all her classes, and still find time to answer emails and make comments on every photo posted. I think this really adds to the class.
by Connie
I have been taking Kelly's class every month since January and it's June now. It's a great class with very specific instructions and examples. The group is welcoming and friendly. Kelly makes a huge effort to participate and comment on all the art work. I highly recommend this class. I can't believe I have produced hundreds of art journal pages.
Jared Knight
http://jaredknight.ning.com/
by Susan- redshoeartist June 2009
Which course did you take?
I have done class # 1, #2 and now currently doing # 3 in Abstract painting.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Yes, the instructions and techniques are there and simple to follow.
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
Yes. He was always an email away.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc.) and was the instructor clear?
Lot's of videos. Techniques are shown clearly, and you use it only as a guide, after all you are working from your own mind, body and soul, not his. He gives great instruction and information and reminds you that there are no limitations unless put there by you.
Did you find the techniques easy?
I did. But I have some knowledge and background in art. I don't think Jared's abstraction is for absolute beginners who need step-by-step instructions on how to paint or need every single mark he makes explained. The openness to meditation, being in touch with your mind, body and soul are essential to get anything out of this class. It really is a free and expressive way to paint. Now up to class #3, we are learning more layering and finishing, things that I think some students were expecting in class #1.. This is a journey which requires time. You will not learn everything from class #1, but you get a fantastic base to start with. I know some students who didn’t do their dailies for whatever reason they had, then wondered why they were finding it hard to know what to do. If you do a class and only take in half of the techniques given, then you will only get half a result back. There is only so much an instructor can give you, the rest is up to you. You get out of it, exactly what you put into it, plain and simple.
Is this instructor teaching something new?
It was new to me. I never knew the importance of working with your power animal, of using your instincts and knowing such freedom to paint. And again, up to class #3, I know there is still a lot to learn in the art of Abstraction.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
I do. I get a lot out of Jared's class because I take in everything he says and follow through with it. He says do your dailies, I do my dailies, he says, meditate with your power animal, I mediate with my power animal...Again, you get out of it, what you yourself put into it, just like anything else. The $59 Jared charged gave me more than the $615 I paid for one unit at university in abstraction.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
No the size of the class was good. Everyone is very supportive and there was regular contact through email and in the chat room. And, more importantly, it wasn't cliquey.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Definitely yes, but like I said before, I would only recommend the course to people who are open to the knowledge of meditation through art. You must be open to the idea of using the human psyche, trust your instincts and not have your hand held throughout the exercises. We all have different instincts, we all have different reactions with our central nervous system, so therefore we all have different marks to make. It is the most exciting way of painting I’ve ever done. There is so much to learn and Jared prompts you with the thoughts to begin with. I personally like this course and highly recommend it.
Misty Mawn
by Palma Rea
I am currently doing Misty Mawn's 'Stretching Within', which ends in 2 weeks time. I love her work and have learned many new things. I was a bit disappointed to learn that her videos would be taken down at the end of the course. It's too much to learn in a short period of time and the videos are always good to go back to if you have not been constant with the course. I was hoping that it would be more about doing portraits because that's what I was looking for. She is considering doing another such online workshop in the near future
$100
By Monika Schmid
I have done two online courses taught by Misty.
The first was called “Painting Layers.” I must say I learned heaps! Misty is very generous in sharing her extensive knowledge and techniques so you will definitely get what you paid for and then some.
The course was well structured and started with painting backgrounds, adding texture, collage and ending with painting faces. I struggled with the painting faces technique and I know quite a few others did too, but there was no time to go more in depth within the scope of this course. After all, the course was called Painting Layers and I must say that since the course I have gained confidence in tackling backgrounds, layering with abandon and without fear.
The class had around 100 participants but even so it did not feel crowded... There are always some people who "lurk" more in the background while others are more vociferous and ask questions a lot and comment. Misty answered the questions quickly and was very helpful.
The second course called “Drawing and Painting Faces” followed, and it was really in depth. It covered drawing, collaging and painting faces in different mediums with many different techniques. In this course I was more of a "lurker" and I have not completed all of the lessons but again I have learned a lot. Again, Misty was very generous with her knowledge and in both courses she gave us little assignments before the course officially started as we were all very anxious and excited to get our hands dirty.
I have had the good fortune of being able to take one of Misty's classes in real life here in Australia. While it was simply amazing to see Misty and the speed with which she works to show techniques, I do prefer the online classes as it suits my style of learning more.
In summary, I would highly recommend both courses if you want to learn more about mixed media art.
Mary Ann Moss
Course: Stencilry
http://dispatchfromla.typepad.com/dispatch_from_la/online-class-inf...
by Corinne
I too love Mary Ann Moss and Stencilry. She is the queen of stencils in my book Videos and Pdfs are wonderful. Take this class -- it is fab.
by Nona
I loved Stencilry (1) with Mary Ann Moss. Her approach to teaching something we may not have tried before is very comfortable, and her instructions are very clear and simple.
She demonstrated each week's lesson in seven-to-nine exciting videos that left me laughing out loud, and very eager to try the technique. She offered alternative products for those of us who couldn't get the ones she recommends (I live in New Zealand) or who cannot use solvent-based spray paints. Mary Ann also provided a 20+ page pdf for each week! So if we learn best visually, orally, or in print, we're covered!
She provided a place to ask questions and read responses on the stencilry site; she replied right away to email. She created a Flickr group for us to share our work, responses, and questions, with one another. We had a lot of participants, but I never felt crowded or lost. In fact MA made it fun to interact and see what each other was trying!
I didn't so much find the techniques “easy” as very-well explained and simple to master. I had never worked with stencils before and was a little intimidated. But MA's videos had me feel, “Hey, I can do this!” And, with some practice, it turns out I could!
For me, these techniques were totally new. I was way outside my comfort zone! I learned to use “found” stencils and commercial stencils, and to cut my own stencils. I learned to use spraying and printing to layer effects. I learned to use a variety of shapes in my art-journal. Everything I learned can also apply to canvas.
I feel I got so much more than I paid for! For NZ$80 (US$40), which is two days labor for me, I received 30-some-odd videos which I watched again and again, four pdfs which I printed and continue to refer to, answers to my questions, a community of like-minded artists, a whole new way of approaching my art, and some new friends!
I highly recommend this course to anyone. I am waiting impatiently for Stencilry 2, and would sign up for any course that Mary Ann was teaching!
That said, I loved MA's down-home, slightly self-deprecating style. I thought she was a hoot! She cleverly led me way outside my comfort zone while not scaring me. But not everyone responds to this; some folks prefer a polished commercial video. I don't.
by Mo Mapes
I agree with Nona; I just signed up with Moss and have not yet started the class physically but have read the pdfs and watched the videos. She is a crack up- my kind of girl! So I hope I learn a lot from her and after reading these posts I think I most certainly will!!!
by Beverly
After seeing Mary Ann's class listed here, I did some digging on the net to find out where the class was listed and the cost. Before these reviews were listed I took the chance to pre-register for the Stencilry 1 class. Mary-Ann came back almost straightaway (allowing for time differences of course) and came across as really nice and friendly and as you say, someone you would actually like to meet. I am looking forward to doing this class and like you this will take me waaaay out of my comfort zone.
by Brian Kasstle
Idid Mary Ann Moss's Stencilry 1 Class and I also loved her class!
The instructions were presented each week in seven to nine easy to view videos (for me) and for those who had difficulty viewing them she was very quick to give alternate ways of viewing the videos. This was supported by 20+ page pdfs that could be downloaded and I continue to refer too. Mary Ann's videos were very easy to follow and understand. The videos themselves were very artistic and hysterical!
Mary Ann was very quick to respond and she still answers questions from me even after the class is over. She is very quick to give alternate ways of doing and working around problems.
She gave us many links and avenues to find stencils and supplies. The demonstrations for cutting stencils were very easy to follow and she also added a flickr site for us to download our work and to connect to others in the class I still am in contact with on a regular basis. Each week we received seven to nine videos with techniques and examples of her inspirational journal techniques. And with each week I could not wait to get out and paint and play with stencils.
I have taken very limited art classes and I found her techniques very, very easy to follow and I have found beautiful results with my work that have allowed me amazing expression beautiful results. Mary Ann becomes your biggest fan and supporter. She gave wonderful expressive comments to our work. She posted pages and pages of our artwork on her own blog.
Mary Ann's class was very new and different than anything I have seen on the web. At a price of $40.00 I have found it a tremendous value! I will be using and expanding on these techniques the rest of my life. Believe me if I can do this anyone can!
The class had a wonderful mix of folks that allowed us to communicate and support each other during the class, everyone I have contacted or has contacted me has been a pure joy to share with.
I would completely recommend this class to others. It gives many, many examples of techniques and stencils, tons of links for inexpensive stencil products. She also teaches you to look at everyday objects and nature for stencils and masks for your work. Her videos are artistic and hysterical. I have gone back and viewed them many, many times over during the class. What kind of artwork can you do that if you don't like how it comes out you can just spray over it and start all over again! Mary Ann's techniques use spray paints, spray mists, stencils, masks and journaling. She is very playful and artistic and becomes your biggest cheerleader! I can NOT wait for her Stencilry 2 class. I will sign up as soon as it is available. For the Stencilry 1 class, $40.00 feel is very affordable; I received very personalized attention and support. I not only learned how to use and cut stencils & masks, paints, spray paints and mists, etc., but the class and Mary Ann also got me over my fear of colors. Before the class I never liked or used pinks, orange, yellow... Probably the most consistent comment I get regarding my work is HOW COLORFUL my artwork is. Thank you Mary Ann! She is an amazing and gifted teacher, and person. Mary Ann is funny, self depreciating, bawdy and hysterical.
by Fran Meneley
I would highly recommend Mary Ann Moss's Stencilry class, “Pure Experimentation,” to anyone who is interested in, or doing mixed media work. Mary Ann has created a very fun, easy to follow on-line class that really guides you through the process of using found stencils, as well as creating your own. It is a class for seasoned mixed media artists, as well as beginners.
The site is easy to follow, includes lots of videos (which I think is the best part, being a visual learner), includes a handy dandy pdf with detailed instructions and an interactive blog format for answering all her students’ questions. She also listed class participants’ websites or blogs, so we could get to know each other and see each other's work. The class is offered at the very generous price of $40 (US), which is a bargain for what you get.
I love having the addition of stencilry knowledge in my mixed media arsenal. It adds a rich layer of visual interest to my work and it's really fun and easy.
Mary Ann has worked very hard to put together an on-line class that really teaches you techniques as well as inspires you to make it your own. Everyone's work was very unique, you could see and hear everyone's individual voices emerge. It's the second best thing to meeting her in person and hanging out in her garden, spray masks on, spraying up a storm. You'll feel like you know her a little when the class is over, which is worth the price of admission alone. She's a talented artist with a unique voice and a wonderful teacher.
I blogged about the class here if you'd like to see what I did in the first lesson: http://franmeneley.typepad.com/fran_meneley/2009/04/pure-stencilry-...
by Marilyn Damschen
Pure Experimentation Stencilry 1 was my first online class. I feel pretty confident that Ms. Moss has set the bar very, very high for future classes. Her tremendous forethought and planning were immediately apparent and it's clear she meant to make this do-able for students at all levels, with varying amounts of previous experience and disposable income. The plethora of video tutorials was very real and very encouraging in that she did not edit out all mistakes and unexpected complications but rather showed on-the-fly ways to adapt and keep on working. I appreciated that they were not slickly produced but rather warm and witty, and was astounded at the quantity of information, all presented in multiple formats. I felt I'd gotten my money's worth after Week One of the four week course and would recommend her classes to anyone.
MaryAnn made herself available to each of us for one-on-one conversations and/or help, created an open forum for us to talk among ourselves, and allowed everyone to submit work to a shared viewing site. Her ability to answer our repetitive questions and guide and encourage us without ever coming across as condescending or frustrated was terrific. (Must be all that monkey-wrangling experience;-) The feedback and commentary were wonderful and the opportunity to see how my classmates applied the same instruction was an unexpected bonus. I wasn't sure if I'd like this new-to-me art form and didn't know what to expect from the class but now I can't wait for Stencilry, part dos!

OMG...would I ever recommend MA!! She is da bomb. She told us what she was going to teach us, then taught us, and finally told us what she taught us. She provided timely instructions to compliment her video instructions, answered questions thoroughly and threw in a cat trick or 2.
The videos were entertaining and informative and believe me when I tell you I am not one to sit and watch for very long if it isn't. They varied enough that she could present the same technique in different ways until it sunk in. The handouts reinforced and expanded on the videos.
She really is a fabulous teacher, presenter of information and encourager. The price was excellent, the content amazing, the discussion worthwhile, handouts useful and I can hardly wait for the next level. I agree with all of the others and would tell everyone to take her classes!

I loved it ! Go! Take the class! Cut and Spray!
by Linda Folkerts
I was given Mary Ann's Pure Experimentation Stencilry class as a birthday gift and as gifts go it was the best gift I could have received! It was a gift that kept on giving with fun, informative videos, pdfs and a great blog and online photo sharing. Everyone has already mentioned how wonderful the content of the class was and I wholeheartedly agree. Let me share with you how exciting it was to have new and fun things to learn each week. Each Friday I could hardly wait to get home from work and view the newest batch of videos, totally immersing myself in dreams of stencilry ,while imagining the art I could create. Then I could print off the pdfs for easy reference, spending hours cutting my own stencils and creating my own world, spraying away to my heart's content. The ultra nice thing is that Mary Ann has put together a very cohesive class and is always there to answer questions, plus for those who need/want/crave the extra class time, as life often intercedes with our creativity, the blog and videos were available for several extra weeks after all the classes had been presented. It was very cool to watch someone else's creative process. Art is so very alchemical after all. Don't ya just love it. I give this class and the instructor 5 stars. Take this class, you won't regret it.

Mary Ann's Pure Experimentation stencil class is well named. While she presents the content instruction in a clear, logically developing sequence, her underlying goal for her students is to take the skills and techniques learned and PLAY. Being playful is how we learn best and Mary Ann's own very playful persona invites us all in. Print instruction supported but did not duplicate what was presented on video. The videos were not only instructive and inspiring, they were highly entertaining. My only regret is that they were not available for purchase. This is a remarkable value for a very reasonable investment. Like everyone else who has spoken, I can hardly wait for the “second semester!”

Not only would I whole hearty recommend taking Mary Ann’s course, but I am anxiously awaiting her next class.
Her techniques and teaching style offer a relaxed instructional format that is easy to follow. She offers ideas that are suited for both the beginner and experienced that is both easy to understand and fun at the same time.
Her videos are incredible and the class pdf files are loaded with information. Any student taking these classes will take away new ideas and techniques. She quickly answers any questions and the students are able to post comments and their artwork. It is a perfect interactive online class.
by Chris M
This is one of the most enjoyable classes I've ever taken, online or in person.
The reasons are:
1. Very reasonably priced.
2. Instructor is very accessible.
3. The videos are plentiful and well-filmed.
4. Mary Ann is down to earth and funny.
5. The stencil-cutting instructions are precise and clear.
6. The timeframe is relaxed and flexible.
7. Many resources are provided for independent research and study.
A very important aspect to any class, to me, is that I can continue to apply what I've learned in my future projects, and this class has exponentially expanded my horizons in that regard. I've used Mary Ann's instruction (and her easy-going, fun approach to any project) numerous times in the couple of months since I began the class, and I will continue to do so.

I took Stencilry1 with Mary Ann and it was just an amazing experience. I had never taken an online course before and I was more than pleased with this one. There was a staggering amount of content, videos, pdf files, links, etc. etc. She has a very accessible and engaging style and through her videos you are actually able to watch her entire creative process from start to finish. I just can't say enough good things about this class. It is also a class that would appeal to an emerging artist or a seasoned professional. There is something for everybody in this one. I would like to add that as an artist, Mary Ann Moss displays an extravagant generosity. Everything she knows...she wants you to know. There is no holding back. I plan on taking the next in this series the moment it becomes available!

M.A. has the magic. The lady can teach. I have seen her journals in person, and I didn't think that I would ever understand the "how" of doing what she does. Her classes are very clear, and easy to follow, but most of all while watching I could barely contain myself because I she always got me so charged up to go be creative and play. I love the easy feel of her videos and her humor, and would highly recommend her online class on friends.

I’ve become a stenciling fool since taking mary ann's stencilry class -- that is the long and short of it! I can't say too many good things about it because I felt the class was perfect from start to finish. *and* not only is the class awesome, but so is mary ann's art, which you get to see her make lots of. inspiration, I tell you!! it's 5 stars and then some...
Julie Prichard

Julie has several workshops with Chris Cozen: Chaos and Calm (Over the Edge painting Techniques), Complex Collage, Pretty Papers, Color: Beyond the Basics, and Super Nova (Art Journaling). I’m not sure if Layer Love is still available.
by Comfortable Shoes
I have taken 2 courses by Julie -- Layer Love and Complex Collage.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand? Very
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
I had none but I noticed that Julie/Chris responded to the questions of others very quickly
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (videos, pdfs or other) and was the instructor clear?
Very much so. Because I have an art background I actually found some of the instruction over kill. But she was very thorough in everything.
Did you find the techniques easy? Yes
Is this instructor teaching something new?
Not really. This is foundation stuff though it's not offered a lot online.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
I won these classes in a twitter contest. But she sells her classes for about $50. If you have not taken a class in painting or collage these would be well worth the money, in terms of depth of instruction AND downloadable information as well as her videos, which are NOT downloadable.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
Not overcrowded. She has "rolling admission," so there were always new people with new questions. There were a lot of people in both classes -- I think 400+ in Layer Love and more than 200 now in Complex Collage. She seemed to be doing fine with answering questions etc.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Absolutely. I've taken a few online courses and in some cases I've been very disappointed. I can't say that's the case here. I was very happy with Julie and Chris's level of instruction. The quality of the video is great as well as the quality of the pdf and other course materials. She aims the course at an art journaling crowd, but the information applies equally to other areas of art. Even had I paid for either of these courses I'd be happy with the level and quality of instruction.
by Rosie
I learned so much from Julie and went on to take her Supernova Class for art journaling - parts I & II. I learned how to make three handmade journals and a lot of techniques and how-tos for art journaling. She's a fab teacher, answers all your questions and I'd never have come such a long way in such a short time if I hadn't taken her classes. She taught me not to be afraid of paints and mediums.
by lee
I have taken the course offered by Julie Prichard called Layer Love. I enjoyed the course and would take another course from her. I found the videos very informative and step by step. They explained how she was achieving the look. There were nine videos -- all very informative. Her interaction with the students was very good and all questions were answered promptly. She viewed the students’ work and gave good comments. All and all the class was very good, a good course for the money. I felt that I had got my money’s worth - most important in this day and age.

The second class that I am doing is Gary Reef's Altered Book online class. He shows you several ways how to alter a book and also make it into a wall hanging. The class lasts one month and he shows you many MANY great techniques and is always available to answer any questions . He is GREAT fun and it's great value for money.

I took the Layering and Texture class with Gary right here on this ning. I had always wanted more texture in my art, this class came at the right time and right place. He has videos that can be downloaded and only some PDF's

Courses: Art Play ($48.00 for 13 videos), Mixed Media With The Girls, Mixed Media Resin (coming soon).
by Nina Bunin
I recently finished the "Paint Free" class w Wyanne, and it was wonderful. Much more about freeing ourselves and enjoying the process than about techniques.
by Jan Fox
I am currently taking both the Art Play and Mixed Media With The Girls and although I am only half way through the Mixed Media class, I am already very impressed with Wyanne's presentation of her techniques, professional video production and generosity. As was mentioned by Judy there are a lot of videos in this class - 26 in fact! I didn't expect anything like that and she takes things very slowly and explains every step. She has a special on for the next few days only of 15% off the classes so I got both for about Aus$100 - very good value and I would highly recommend as I am sure it will just get better as I get further into the lessons.
I always learn something from taking lessons online and although I haven't actually learned anything new at this stage, she has demonstrated how to combine techniques I use in a new way and that is valuable.
by Judy
I took two online classes with Wyanne. The first one was Art Play and the second was Mixed Media with the Girls, which was how to draw her girls.
For Art Play: Wonderful techniques that I did know of, but it's always nice to see it shown again and I did pick up some new ideas. They were all easy techniques but with great, fun results. She did produce many videos, so for all her time and effort, it was worth the money. Wyanne answered any questions students needed via her special blog she set up and also via emails.
For Mixed Media with the Girls: I can't remember the cost of this but it wasn't too costly, a bit more that Art Play.. But Wyanne created 22 videos for this class. She was so detailed with her steps and showed us painting from beginning to end. She even made mistakes and said that is the way it goes and showed how she fixed them. It was nice to see an artists be real.
Wyanne's voice is very calming and easy to follow. I like the fact that she allowed us to download all her videos to keep and not charge us extra for them like some other artists that charge extra after you have paid all this money for the class. AND they are still up on her site and you can still watch them. She has not taken them off to all her students. I love that.
Bottom line: I learned some great background techniques and how to approach drawing figures. Wyanne's classes were definitely worth it and I would take more from her.

I am in Tam's Fabulous faces class. A new one she has. it is amazing. There is so much course material it boggles my mind. And we are only on lesson #4 of 6! I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn three poses of faces. Front, 3/4 and profile. I am faithfully practicing every day and s l o w but sure I am improving.
by Janie Husband
I purchased fabulous faces and world of whimsy on dvd from tam and am taking wow2 at present ...what a fabulous instructor she is.....so easy to listen to and follow.....don't know what took me so long to join in on her classes but I am a BIG fan..
by Spring Devlin
I took Tam's Fabulous Faces course.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand? Yes
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
Yes Tam was answering questions, giving feedback and encouragement.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, pdfs or other) and was the instructor clear?
I found her to be a very good teacher. She had a video up weekly with a bonus video at the end.
Did you find the techniques easy?
Not all of them. But that was no fault of Tam’s.
Is this instructor teaching something new?
It was new to me.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Oh yes. I look forward to taking more courses from Tam. She is a wonderful person. With a great spirit that just inspires you.
by Lu
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Yes -- very easy to understand
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
I didn't have any questions but saw Tam was very attentive to those who did
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, Pdfs or other) and was the presentation clear?
The videos and pdfs were fantastic. I understand exactly what was entailed in the course and felt it was delivered.
Did you find the techniques easy? Yes
Is this instructor teaching something new?
It wasn't new to me but was good to get Tam's perspective and a few of her tips.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Except for the crash of the Australian dollar, which hurt on conversion, the class was value for money.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
Class size didn't bother me.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Yes. It was clear to me that Tam is super organized when delivering a class. I thought her class structure was very detailed and professional.
Appreciated that all course content could be downloaded.
by Jolie Dennison
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Yes, techniques were very easy to understand, plus they were presented in a very casual and personal way that really put me at ease. I felt like I was in the room, creating right beside her.
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
Tam was very quick to respond and was always willing to go the extra mile with sharing information.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc) and was the instructor clear?
The videos and pdfs were very clearly explained and material reviewed just the right amount. Tam would often explain, demonstrate, then recap, which helped me to take it all in.
Did you find the techniques easy?
Yes
Is this instructor teaching something new?
I have taken other mixed media whimsical girl courses, so the subject matter wasn't new, but the way Tam taught it definitely was. Rather than teaching only one drawing style, she showed several different ways of drawing features. This helped me to give myself the permission I needed to experiment and really took my girls to another level. I truly feel my artwork is so much better, partially as a result of this class,
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Absolutely good value for money.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
Class size was fine.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Yes, I wholeheartedly recommend this class, even if you are an experienced artist. I am and have also been teaching for years, but I picked up so many tips and new ideas. You can never know everything there is to know with art, so it was great learning things from another artist's perspective.
by Ingrid
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
Everything was very easy to understand and beautifully presented.
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
Yes, quick and very dependable.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc.) and was the instructor clear?
Yes.
Did you find the techniques easy?
I find willowing's shading technique very beautiful, but didn't take to it like a fish to water. Some probably master it quicker than others, but the videos are downloadable so I can keep going back to it, and each time I watch it I take in a new little detail. Since this work is very new to me it is probably too much to take in at one time.
Thanks to this workshop, I went from being only able to draw realistically to being able to also draw a human figure whimsically and out of thin air. Yeah, that in itself is worth the workshop many times over.
Is this instructor teaching something new?
For me the art techniques were completely new. It may be new to you if you already make whimsical art, but willowing has her own slant, so I think everyone would learn something new. And then there is the healing part of the workshop, which is not just thrown in as a side dish, but feels like an integral part of the teacher's life and therefore of her art. Some of the material on healing I was familiar with. I loved willowing's down to earth explanations of the healing techniques.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Most certainly.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
The amount of people wasn't an issue for me. I loved being exposed to the art of all the participants that posted their results. I learnt a lot from that too, and other people's questions are always so useful too. I found the whole atmosphere of the workshop very conducive to learning on many levels.
Would you recommend the course to others?
Yes yes yes. I find willowing a great teacher, who provides a wonderful mix of intimacy, boundaries and professionalism.
by Angiecat
I took Tam's (Willowing) World of Whimsy class.
Were the instructions of the technique easy to understand?
I admit, this is my first online workshop - I have no comparison. That said, Tam's instruction was REALLY clear and easy to understand. If there were bits that some found confusing, she made herself available to clarify. Sometimes she would add some clarification in a next video. She provided written instructions for each week, and there was a video. I won't go into all of the details as I see others have done this in their reviews as well. Easy to understand? Yes!
Was the instructor (if applicable) quick to respond to your questions?
Yes, Tam made herself available via her forum, as well as weekly chats online in real-time. Awesomeness.
Was there enough explanation of the techniques? (Videos, etc.) and was the instructor clear?
Yes, there were various techniques shown, and lots of commentary on specifics of each technique. Videos weekly, and pdfs per each lesson as well. Really clear instruction.
Did you find the techniques easy?
I consider myself a beginner, and definitely a beginner with drawing faces and bodies of any kind. For the first week, I had a bit of anxiety and doubt! I sat down and worked through it. It was helpful that we had a forum to discuss and I could see there were others feeling the anxiety as well. After that first week, the anxiety waned and I was well on my way! I can't say I found it "easy" but I was really proud of my results. The techniques were not beyond my ability - I just wasn't aware of that until I DID it.
Is this instructor teaching something new?
Well of course it was new to ME. There seems to be a lot of people doing folk art girls these days but each person seems to have a bit of a different slant to their technique and style. New to me, that's all that mattered.
Do you think this course is value for money and did you get what you paid for?
Honestly, I really enjoyed taking this class. I not only feel I paid for the class and got what was offered there, but the feelings of joy I had while doing it was more than worth what I paid for this class. I live in Canada and the course was in $US so it ends up being a bit more in the end but I would NOT NOT NOT hesitate to pay it again. "Happy" is beyond price - as long as you can afford it without financial hardship. As far as the content - I do feel Tam definitely put effort and detail into the class and materials - yes, it was worth the cost.
Did you find the course to be overcrowded or was it just the right amount of people?
As others commented - there were quite a number of people in the class - around 100-ish - but, it felt like a big giggly party! We all had so much fun! I so looked forward to each week, and was never overwhelmed or frustrated once my initial anxiety passed (week 1). I am so happy with this first experience doing an online class and definitely will do more.
In summary, I would not hesitate to recommend Tam as a great online workshop teacher. She's so awesome and fun.

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.
And this is the completed screen ready for printing. I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
