Welcome to the JUNGLE

Each month I will be demonstrating and creating a mixed media artwork. The aim of this is to give you ideas and to help you develop new knowledge and skills. To help you with this challenge, I have created a visual story board 'Step by step' of how to create an artwork similar to this one.

Your challenge is to create something similar. You can of course use any colours and patterns that you prefer, etc. Post your results below!

HERE is a direct link to the VISUAL STORY BOARD on my website showing you a step by step guide of how to create something similar!  Good luck and looking forward to seeing your fantastic original creations!

Holy crap! And to think I was a computer tech for 26 years. I guess what you see isn't necessarily what you get!   Hey. I even "dragged" a smiley. Life can't get much better than this!
Thanks, Cynthia and Mary. I see what the problem is now. It's that bitumen stuff. I looked online for Noxudol 1600 (which was a suggestion on this site), and everything makes complete sense. In the description of Noxudol 1600, it says, " When applied in thicker layers it also provides a excellent sound damping effect." If Gary had used something different than bitumen, we probably could have heard his explanations.
Help!  This is as far as I dare go for now.  Am I suppose to varnish it before adding, the black ink (bitumen stage).  Anybody have any suggestions?  Yes do varnish, no, not yet?
Nope you don't varnish it yet...get that beautiful mucky bitumen all over it like i know you wanna LOL! Love your fish stencil and the white pattern!

Thanks Gary!  The pattern is a sink mat from the $ store.  Makes a wonderful stencil! The fish are a silk screen using a Provocraft design.

Well, here goes!  I'll see what happens tomorrow!

I tied to make a new ...but i am unsure abouth the owl??
I like the flowers at the top as it looks very chinesey and the muted figure too.

Gary,

Where do you get this bitumen asphalt stuff?  I remember you mentioning it way back when over a year ago when I was reading, but I just can't remember.

Thank you,

Crystal

By the way,

thank you for the tutorial.  It is a great one with all of the close up photos and explanations when need be.

Cynthia,

Your piece is working really well as a composition.  I wonder if adding any print of some sort would be good to impliment in this piece as another layer.  I would just keep working on layers.

Crystal

Thanks Crystal-if you can't find Bitumen, try Chinese Sumi Ink for the wash out technique.  It worked fabulously!  I'll share pics soon. :-D

I love layers, here are a couple of pieces I finished last week and just thought I would post.

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
