Personally I think where you work greatly affects creativity - well I know it does with me. Ever since I was little I always wanted a cottage in the country, (even in Australia I imagined a cottage in some European country lol) with a large studio attic overlooking fields of sheep cows and forest. Quiet and Peaceful away from the city and people. LOL well that's the Dream. I'm not sure it would make me a better artist but it would make me a happy one. I'm a solitary person and I like to immerse myself in peaceful spaces. I find I'm more creative in the country then the city. The city hems me in. I can find creativity in the city only if I immerse myself in the vibrant energies of art classes and university, but find I stagnate without that push of united creative energies.

The Reality is I share the dining table with my Husband and his computers, I'm forever cramped and in fear that something will spill and damage his laptops or papers. His space keeps building what I call as rubbish and he calls paperwork, which constantly creeps over into my half of the table. On top of that, there is always the anxiety that it all has to be put away and find a place to be if someone comes round.

Having to share this space has shown me that your own space is imperative part of Creativity. I like to spread out - I like to do more than one thing at a time, moving from inspiration to inspiration. Everything has to be on view for me so I can visualize and draw inspiration from what I see. I like to Pin things on Walls and have my canvas work set up ready and space to dabble in sculpture if I choose. As is, I flail around with unfinished images lost in paper and canvas work lost in the lack of space. My Inspiration and Creativity are suffering greatly. So If I can't have the Dream I would like a spare room lol.

Some people can draw on the corner of a table - pull out their paints and finish a piece, put it away and then start again. I just can't do that. So in answer - No I don't think having my "Dream" space would make me a better artist, but I do believe having "My Space" would.

This is a great question Heather, I look forward to hearing what other people do and feel about this. :)
I want a studio where I can paint, offer my art for sale and have a place for other artists to meet and collaborate. A space where I can hang my paper and canvasses on the wall and use spray paints and throw enamels to my hearts content without having to worry about getting paint on the floor.

A private place with no interuptions, just me and my muse and my art. Of course it would be overlooking the ocean, with a terrace and big couches with fluffy pillows. Wonderful music with a great beat would always be playing to inspire my brushstrokes. Colors would be everywhere, bold and bright. I would also have my studio dog and my studio cat. My supplies would be organized and within easy reach always.

It would be right in the heart, smack dab of a huge artist colony. I would eat, breathe, think art all day and night. Oops, hubbys hungry, gotta go but I think you have the idea! :)
I want to be in Ellen's studio!!! It sounds wonderful. I currently have a studio space in my basement. I'm lucky that it is a walkout basement with regular sized windows in the room. I recently opened up a wall into a storage area to gain more space - it's now about 10x12 feet. It's still not big enough.

I want a space that can be broken into 2 sections - one for silversmithing and one for painting and mixed media. I want a large space with high ceilings and lots of natural light. I want a cozy nook with a comfortable rocking chair. My books and inspirational materials would be within easy reach and I could curl up and dream up the next project. I'd have plenty of storage for all the materials and canvases, etc. It would be well organized (ha!) and I'd be able to find what I needed.

I don't know if the space would help me be a better artist. I don't even want to say I'd be happier. I have spent many happy hours in this space. I seem to get "lost" when I come down here and often hours go by before I know it.
A large well lit space with lots of windows and storage overlooking the Australian Biushland, kangaroos and their joeys coming up top the garden nibbling the herbs in my pots, a fire in the corner and enough apace for my pottery studio on one side and painting mixed media on the other.......

oh and enough time to enjoy it!!!!

Realistically at the moment I have one small room for everything adn this mixed media thing is very messy!!!!! One day........ I dream
I had a shared papermaking space at a warehouse that has been converted to artists' studios until last June. (Pictures of that space are on my blog at http://lorrieabdo.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-am-artist.html) The gentleman that owned most of the papermaking equipment passed away and we had to shut down. Every time I went down there I felt so cool. In fact, it wasn't until I got that studio space that I allowed myself to say that "I am an artist". It was very empowering!

Now, I have a bedroom in which to work but my papermaking stuff is all crammed into our basement and now being used at all. I know I'm lucky to have space at all as the kitchen table method of working definitely would cramp anyone's style. Nonetheless, I can wish for something that allows me to have everything in one place thus eliminating running up and down the stairs a milllion times and wondering "now, where is that?". Here's my wish:

* A space that would allow me to have "stations". One area would be for "wet" papermaking work. One area would be for "dry" work (bookbinding, computer, business stuff). One area would be for painting. One area would be for storage of finished work ready to go to sales. One area would be for storage of misc. supplies. One area would be for ??? and ??? and ???.

* A space that has a lake view. I'm in Michigan, where you're never more than a couple of miles from a lake. Problem is that all that space listed above and lakefront property costs $$$. :)

* A space that is separate from the house but still close to the hub bub of my family.

* A space that has a water source and a sink that doesn't have to be cleaned out immediately. Lots of great light is a must too.

Good question.

I need more space damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are going to be renovating our house soon and I will be claiming a large portion of the new basement area. I will leave the area unfinished so that I can make as much mess as I want and not have to worry about getting paint on the floor, walls, mirrors, stairs etc.... :)
I often dream of a big space like a loft wich has different specific areas for the different stuff I like to do, painting, sculpting with clay, assemblage, sewing, paper art works, alteredbooks, journaling, and music writing, with big tables and closets for each one to store the supplies and keep them closed to keep a clean look, I want to try painting large sizes and be able to dance while I do and would love to have a great view to watch the sunrise and sunset or even the stars at night with an open view to a valley or great city like Paris, this place is in a harmonic enviroment and artist friends come along a play and it has a great kitchen to cook memorable dinners. :) I´m sure I could go on and on and on...
This was a happy dreaming! xoxo!
I have a photo of my current space here!
My dream space would be a large, airy, well lit space with full length windows over-looking the ocean. Close enough to the beach so that I could stop working for a bit and take a walk. Come back refreshed and re-energized.

It would also have plenty of tables and storage space. It would be painted in cheery colors.

And it would also have running water and a utility sink. My current studio doesn't have running water and I must cart all brushes in the house to wash them.

Would it make me a better artist? No but I would be a happier one. :)
A place big enough for large works. A place where it would not matter if I splashed paint on the walls...
My husband is a dear man! He is in the process of building me a studio in our back yard...not too large....10x12', but a larger space than I have now....all mine! I will finally be able to work in solitude with my music and hopefully with little interuption! He is almost done with the outside of it and then comes the fun part for me...designing the inside. I am extremely grateful for this!! I don't know as it will make me a better artist, but I do know it will save my sanity! When it comes along just a bit more I will post a photo.
Read all of your wishes and can consider myself 1 of the lucky 1s...
After moving 8 times my studio (!!!!) am at home, decided not to have a dining place and its really high. Situated on a very good spot of Lisbon, near the river, have a garden where can do all the mess pleases me.
You can c a movie on YouTube where show all the house (be prepared to get bored, dogs, kitchen, everything is there!)
Anyway my dream would be to have a loft in NYC 1 is never satisfied but then if you were you'dnt be an artist, just a conformist!
Studio, home, dogs, get bored!!
My place would be by a quiet beach, maybe not one with huge surf but a gentle ripple of waves . The house would have views of the beach and my studio would be a huge room with french doors opening out onto a covered deck that overlooks the beach. Of course it would be filled with lots of fantastic paints and canvasses. my friends would be happy to drop by and sit and have coffee with me on the deck and there should be cake involved and some great discussions. Of course I must have a good sound system so I can play music if i don't want to listen to the music of the waves. I would hold workshops for encaustics and mixed media and it would be the most wonderful creative environment. Oh and if we are dreaming here....then there would be a magic cleaning up fairy who does all the boring stuff so I can paint all day guilt free.
Can anyone tell me where this place is??

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
