It would seem there are going to be changes happening with ning. We should all take  a look at the below, and see what its implications, and our choices and alternatives are.

In brief, ning are proposing to start charging for the site/networks, and for those of us with very popular ning sites (yes, you Gaz) thats going to mean some kind of change is inevitable - I for one can't see it as reasonable that the site owner should have to bear the costs.

We have a couple of weeks, friends, artists, and lovers, so what can we come up with as a community to help maintain the empowerment, guidance and friendship this site so obviously provides?

Just an afterthought, but if any LMM'ers know of other ning site owners, why not give them a quick heads up?
I for one would be willing to pay a small monthly fee to keep this ning site alive....it provides an awful lot....alot more than most others! Welcome to the world of paying for the internet...it is only a matter of time when you are going to see this in alot of companies and providers!!
Yeah, copy that. But it will also create competition...like www.socialgo.com - and I think there are a number of ways in which sites can be monetized in such a way to create the least amount of financial pain. Thanks for your reply!
Thanks for the heads up Eric...I have joined other nings myself... but never really participate as this is my favorite ..and where I learn the most..share the most..and where real art is happening...including all of Gary's teaching..I also would support Gary's ning...
I can see where this is going to force a lot of people to decide which Ning sites they want to be a part of if they have to pay for each one. Personally, I tried other sites and bowed out because I just don't have time to participate well in several. So I picked this one because I think it is the best one I know of that is just about art and not a bunch of other things mixed in. I have learned more these last 6 months than I could of in several years. AND the community is great. I never thought I would have artsy friends in so many countries and everyone is so good about helping when someone needs it. So for me I would gladly help out with the cost to keep this site going. BUT- it is coming.........having to pay for the Net. We new it was going to happen...hoping it wouldn't....but business is business.
AND THE COMPETITION BEGINS!!!
it will still be free to participate on the ning sites, but the site owners will have to start forking out cash for their social networks if they don't already or if they are forking out cash ... will have to fork out more.

too bad there aren't any alternatives to ning. there are though.

dolphin and elgg are my faves as a web programmer ... and the are free so the only thing you pay for is your own webhosting and domain.
Thanks for this post Eric it is interesting to hear what people say about the changes. I've been paying pretty much since i opened the site because i hate google adds. The world is full of them and i get sick of it, bad enough on youtube.
I think this site is worth investing in and i don't mind forking out a few extra bucks to make sure it stays around for the benefit of everyone inc. myself. And when i put up the donate button occasionally then people are welcome to donate what they can!
Always up to help in whatever way I can Gary. You are one of the really good guys out there whose efforts deserve to be recognised.Don't ever be afraid to ask for help, I am sure there will be many of us here for you. Shine On!

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
