art on a guitar
Hello LMM friends!
I will meet with an international musician who wants my art on is guitar. My art is best done on a canvas or lighter paper to achieve its results then it could be put on his guitar. Has anyone ever collaged onto this type of surface? First thought I could do this for him then maybe I thought that I would just do the art and he could have someone adhere it onto the guitar. Any ideas how this could be done or comments?

There is someone on LMM who has decorated guitars before! Can't remember who so that's not much help.

well... one question is --- what does he want to do with his guitar? does he want to play it? perform with it? that makes a big difference. I wouldn't want paper on a guitar i'm going to perform with. you have to be careful -- even with varnish--- because it can change the instrument's tone.
that's the first question.
If he is not going to play the guitar, then you're free to do whatever you want with it.

even paint can change the tone of a guitar's soundboard, so you might want to think about painting the sides and back before you paint the front. I know someone who paints using tinted VARNISH-- let me see if i can find it. Is this a very good guitar with value that he wants to keep? because if it is, it will lose value.

I will have to ask him some questions when he comes over. I do not want to change the sound of his guitar that is for sure. I also do not want to paint with varnish. The idea of breathing varnish for days at a time is not something that I want to do to my lungs. I did see the project guitar but I guess that was a guitar that was just for show and not for playing as the art is all over it and you said that would change the sound. So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.
And this is the completed screen ready for printing. I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).
