Help Lmm to continue for another year!

I am currently asking for assistance with the yearly site fee for LMM. I am sure you are aware that it does cost money to maintain a social network. If you are in a position to help financially then it would be greatly appreciated. You can give as much or as little as you like. Thank you in advance for your support of LMM!

Ian Fairweather was an Australian painter. He was born in Scotland in 1839 and arrived in Melbourne Australia 1934. He is considered one of the greatest Australian Painters of all time , combining western and asian influnences in his work.

He built a hut on Bribie Island where he lived and created the most important work of his life. His exhibitions were always packed and his work was always sold out. He hated being in the spotlight and mostly never attended his own exhibitions.

Fairweather was not worried about longevity and would often paint on cardboard and as the work would progress he simply added another piece to extend the boarder out further.

Settled inside his leaking, mosquito-ridden hermit's hut, the act of painting was the thing. "It gives me the same kind of satisfaction that religion, I imagine, gives to some people." He did not much care what happened to his work afterwards, to the extent of disowning and even not recognising it. Of Epiphany, singled out by Hughes as one of the masterpieces of Australian art, Fairweather's terse comment was: "I don't like it." On the unique occasion that Bail met Fairweather, bringing for verification a slide of a 1956 gouache of a bridge in Huchow, the artist barely glanced at it and said, "I don't remember it." About critics, he wrote to Queenie:

Today they smile on me for no good reason. Tomorrow they may damn me for equally no reason. I damn them all the time. My teeth are chattering. Must stop.

You ask about abstract art -- it is something I think like the Buddhist idea of suspended judgment. The mind is cleared of thought but not awareness. Always the purpose of art is to find its way through the forest of things to a larger unity containing all things. I often had the idea in Jersey that running over rocks (of which I was inordinately fond) had some psychological or psychical significance -- to balance, one must run quickly from point to point. You cannot rest on one point.

It was why, he suggested, modern art tended more and more to the abstract -- "to get away from our stricken world".

My thoughts

I think as artists today we live in such a chaotic and busy world, we are constantly surrounded by other artists and their work and this is all due to the internet. I think the danger for many of us, is that we can get so caught up and distracted by what is going on around us online, that we neglect our own creative path. For me Ian Fairweather is that reminder to be the 'Hermit' in regards to our own creativity. To spend more time focusing on our own path and less time on everyone elses.

Year of the Dragon

This month ushered in the Year of the Dragon. Many Chinese artists express themselves using eggshells.

More Spots and Dots from Damien Hirst

The Gagosian Gallery is featuring British artist Damien Hirst’s color spot paintings simultaneously at its 11 global locations. While Hirst made his first spot canvas in 1986, the most recent dots are 1 mm in diameter, and no color is repeated in a canvas.  ABOVE painting is banksy's take on hirst.

No da Vinci Handbag for YOU!

Fashion house Gherardini is recreating a handbag designed by Leonardo daVinci back in 1497.  The design was discovered among then tens of thousands of drawings in the artist’s Atlantic Codex. The only problem: Gherardini is only making 99 purses.

Odd Woman Damages Clyfford Still Painting

Police are baffled as to why Carmen Tisch, 36, punched and scratched a large American abstract expressionist painting at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, CO, then took off her pants and slid down the artwork.   The woman caused $10,000 worth of damage to Still's “1957-J-No.2,”  valued at more than $30 million.
