Aboriginal Gallery in Sydney

Last weekend I took some time to go to Sydney. I happened to call in to see one of my good friends who runs a small gallery down in the rocks (which is 5 mins walk from Sydney harbour and the Opera House).

This small gallery is jam packed full of amazing traditional and contemporary Aboriginal Art. Most of the artists come from the top and central parts of Australia. The owner of the gallery is aboriginal and several times a year he flies up to the different aboriginal communities and purchases their work, which he then brings back to his gallery where he puts his own price on the work and sells it.

I prefer the more contemporary style as I find it really refreshing, bright and alive (not to say that the traditional pieces aren't).
Now let me tell you about some of the prices. The most expensive artist in this gallery is a guy by the name of Tommy Watson. This piece below sells for a cool $70,000.

This piece below is my absolute favourite and sells for just $8000.

Overall it was an amazing experience to visit the gallery to see the works up close.

Black Bayou with Rainbow

"Well, I keep seeing busted, shredded tires on the road, and they look like such interesting shapes.  I had to see if I could use them for something.  However, so far they are trees.  Lol.  "

"I must say Frank, you're very imaginative with your use of materials. I don't think I would have ever thought of using a shredded tire! Looks great."

"Thanks, Sara. The lens itself is unaltered. However, the piece of metal (the one with the series of openings) surrounding the lens was altered with copper paint and patina."

HERE ARE 2 LINKS to TWO of my youtube videos talking and demonstrating about this amazing product:

So once i have my image printed onto transparency film, I take my Ezscreen silk screen which has been coated in light sensitive emulsion (These sheets come pre-coated so they are ready to use). Place it onto a black board, then place the transparency image on top (this part needs to be done in a dark room with no direct sunlight). I take it outside and expose it for 1 minute and 40 seconds (but time varies depending on time of day and strength of sunlight). After i have exposed the image i place it into a tub of water for around 5 - 8 minutes. Then i rinse the screen out under fast running water until the unexposed area (the black) washes away. I then expose the screen to the sun for a further 20mins to completely harden the light sensitive emulsion.

And this is the completed screen ready for printing.  I simply use an old credit card to spread the ink over the screen making sure i do one complete full stroke across the screen (holding the credit card at a 45 degree angle). I immediately wash the screen out under fast flowing water and pat dry. I use fabric screen printing ink which washes out in water (which makes the process easy).

I love this product, their website is http://ezscreenprint.com/ (for full instructions and details on how to purchase this awesome product).
